| Description |
| The word arthritis actually means joint inflammation. The term arthritis is used to describe more than 100 rheumatic diseases and conditions that affect joints, the tissues which surround the joint and other connective tissue. The pattern, severity and location of symptoms can vary depending on the specific form of the disease. Typically, rheumatic conditions are characterized by pain and stiffness in and around one or more joints. The symptoms can develop gradually or suddenly. Certain rheumatic conditions can also involve the immune system and various internal organs of the body

| Root Causes |
Certain factors have been shown to be associated with a greater cause of arthritis. Some of these causes are modifiable while others are not.
Non-Modifiable Causes:
- Age: The risk of developing most types of arthritis increase with age.
- Gender: Most types of the arthritis are more common in women; 60% of all the people with arthritis are women.
- Genetic: Specific genes are associated with the higher risk of certain types of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematous (SLE).
Modifiable Causes:
- Overweight and Obesity: Excess weight can contribute to both the onset and the progression of knee osteoarthritis.
- Joint Injuries: damage to a joint can contribute to the development of osteoarthritis in that joint.
- Infection: Many microbial agents can infect joints and potentially cause the development of various forms of arthritis.
- Occupation: Certain occupations involving repetitive knee bending are associated with osteoarthritis of the knee.

| Symptoms |
The signs and symptoms of arthritis may come and go over time. They include
- Pain and swelling in your joints, especially in smaller joints of hands and feet.
- Generalized aching or stiffness of the joints and muscles, especially after sleep or after period of rest.
- Loss of motion of the effected joints.
- Fatigue which can be severe during a flare-up.
- Low-grade fever
- Deformity of joints over time.
- General sense of not feeling well

| Home Remedies |
- Two teaspoons of lemon juice and a teaspoon of honey mixed in a cup of warm water taken twice a day is good for curing arthritis.
- Two teaspoons of juice of fresh leaves of bathua, drink everyday on an empty stomach for 2-3 months.
- Half a teaspoon of turmeric powder with warm water helps cure arthritis.
- Two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and two teaspoons of honey dissolved in a small glass of warm water taken once or twice a day brings relief.
- Rub the aching joints with hot vinegar to get some relief from pain.
- Two parts pure olive oil and one part kerosene makes a wonderful liniment to bathe afflicted joints.
- Add one tablespoon cod liver oil to the juice of one orange, whip and drink before sleeping.
- Apply a cooling substance, such as sandalwood powder paste by taking one teaspoon of sandalwood powder and adding sufficient water to make a paste. Rub it gently into the joint.
- One raw clove of garlic everyday is very beneficial. This clove can be fried in ghee (clarified butter) or castor oil. Take for two months.
- Guggulu is very helpful in curing arthritis. Eat half a teaspoon twice a day after meals with warm water.
- Exercise with afflicted joints in tub full of hot water.
- Drink carrot juice, cucumber juice, cooked vegetables, vegetable soups, coconut water for healthy body and message daily to cuer arthritis.
- On an empty stomach eat 2-3 walnut or some coconut.
- Avoid mental tensions like stress, depression, grief, etc.
- Lose weight and get close to your ideal weight. If you weigh less, there is less weight on your joints, and less pain.

| Precautions |
- Foods which are easily digestible and do not produce gas are good in arthritis patients.
- Vegetable juices and soups, fresh juices of carrot, beat root and cucumber mixed together are also beneficial. Coconut water or coconut milk is useful to clean the bowel.
- Green salad with dressing of lemon juice and a little salt is good.
- Khichree, a recipe made by cooking one part of rice and six parts mug dal (green beans or pulses) is very useful in arthritis.
- Cooked vegetables like squash, zucchini and pumpkin are good. Cooking with spices like cumin, coriander, ginger, asafetida,. Garlic, fennel and turmeric also helps a lot to relieve symptoms of arthritis.
- Regular use of castor oil as cooking medium is useful in all types of arthritis.
- Regular physical exercise and every day massage with til oil or mahanarayana oil should form an important part of life style.
- Avoid eating hot, spicy and fried foods, sweets. Gas forming foods like cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, broccoli and potatoes should be prohibited.
- Avoid taking too much tea, coffee, alcohol, white sugar, yogurt, chocolate and cokes.
- Excessive smoking and irrational use of antibiotics, pain killers and steroids may increase the symptoms of arthritis.
- Avoid sleeping during daytime, waking up late in the night and mental tensions like worry, anxiety, fear, stress and grief etc.
