Backpain
Description
Back pain (also known as Dorsopathy) is pain felt in the back that may originate from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine. Acute or short-term low back pain generally lasts from a few days to a few weeks. Most acute back pain is the result of trauma to the lower back or a disorder such as arthritis. Pain from trauma may be caused by a sport injury, work around the house or in the garden, or a sudden jolt such as a car accident or other stress on spinal bones and tissues.
Root Causes
  • Injury or overuse of muscles, ligaments, facet joints, and the sacroiliac joints.
  • Pressure on nerve roots in the special canal.
  • Small fractures to the spine from osteoporosis.
  • Muscle spasm (very tense muscles that remain contracted).
  • Ruptured or herniated disk.
  • Degeneration of the disks.
  • Poor alignment of the vertebrae.
  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing the spinal canal).
  • Strain or tears to the muscles or ligaments supporting the back.
  • Spine curvatures which may be inherited and seen in children and teens.
  • Other medical conditions like fibromyalgia.
Symptoms

Pain and spasm of the muscles in the lower back is the hallmark of back pain. This can occur after standing, stooping, bending, lifting, or after sitting in a chair for too long a time. Occasionally, pain is diffusely localized over the entire lower back.

Back pain usually referred to as acute if it has been present for less than a month and chronic if ii lasts for longer than a month. Young people are more likely to have brief acute episodes of back pain and chronic pain is more characteristic of older people.

Precautions
If you must stand for long periods of time, alternate placing your feet on a low footstool to take some of the load off your lower back. When sitting, choose a seat with good lower back support or place a pillow or rolled towel in the small of your back to maintain its normal curve. Keep your knees and hips level. When lifting, let your legs do the work. Move straight up and down. Keep your back straight and bend only at the knees. Hold the load close to your body. Avoid lifting and twisting simultaneously.
