Irritable bowel
syndrome is a functional disorder of the intestine.
It can occur at any age but occurs mainly at
adulthood or middle age. Mainly women suffer
from it.
Root Causes
Causes of irritable
bowel syndrome are not yet known. It has been
found that colons of people suffering from irritable
bowel syndrome are more sensitive than normal
people. The muscles may contract soon after meal
and thus cause cramping or diarrhea. The nerves
may sensitive to bowel movements.
Symptoms
Abdominal cramping and pain that are relieved
after bowel movements.
Alternating periods of diarrhea and constipation.
Change in the stool frequency or consistency.
Gassiness.
Passing mucus from the rectum.
Bloating.
Abdominal distension.
Home Remedies
Eat fresh vegetables
and fruits. Eat a fiber rich food. Fibre improves
working of intestine and stabilizes the symptoms.
Avoid caffeine and fat. Drink at least eight glasses
of water everyday. Avoid carbonated beverages.
Gas produced due to their consumption will worsen
the symptoms. Eat small meals frequently instead
of large meal. Eat foods which contain good amount
of carbohydrates e.g., rice, pasta and so on.
Precautions
Maintaining good physical fitness improves
bowel function and helps reduce stress.
Stopping smoking is important for overall
good health.
Avoid coffee, gas-producing foods and spicy
foods may help.
Reducing or eliminating alcohol consumption
may help.
